Grinton College Cambridge Concert
Cremona Summer Festival 2023
From 5 July 2023 to 6 July 2023
piazza Duomo and piazza Sant'Abbondio
26100 Cremona
Italy
Wednesday, July 5 at 21.00 at the Cathedral of Cremona and Thursday, July 6, at the Church of Sant'Abbondio, in Cremona, the Choir Grinton College of Cambridge will perform. The stop in Cremona is particularly significant to remember the two musicians: Cremona, the city where Ingegneri was maestro di cappella at the service of Bishop Niccolò Sfondrati (later elected pope with the name of Gregory XIV) and the city of birth of Monteverdi: in fact, the proposed music places at the center of the performances the musician from Cremona Marc'Antonio Ingegneri (1535 or 6-1592) and his disciple - who will surpass in fame the master - Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) of which, this year, marks the 380 anniversary of his death. Among the scheduled tracks, will be performed: “Cantate Domino-Jubilate”, Dalla Missa “Gustate et videte”: “Kyrie Sanctus”, “Agnus Dei I”, “Agnus Dei II”, “O Domine Jesu Christe”, “Ne derelinquas me”, “Adoramus te Christe”, “Antonius confessor magne”, “Surrexit pastor bonus”, “Regina Coeli”, “Haec Dies a4”, “Salve Regina” (M.Ingegneri); “Adoramus te Christe”, “Christe adoramus te”, “Cantate Domino” (C.Monteverdi).
The initiative is part of the thirteenth edition of the Cremona Summer Festival and the project "Heavenly Music. Itineraries between Art and Music", in collaboration with the Thursdays of the center. The Cremona Summer Festival is organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Cremona with the Institute of Musical Studies "Claudio Monteverdi", with the contribution of Regione Lombardia and with the patronage and collaboration of the Municipality of Cremona, the Consortium of Liutai "Antonio Stradivari" Cremona, the Cremona International Music Academy, the Touring Club, the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival and the Youth Orchestra Festival of Florence.
The concerts of the festival are free and subject to availability. In case of bad weather, the concerts will take place under the arcades of the Courtyard itself.
Girton Chapel Choir
The Girton College Chapel Choir has earned a great reputation as one of the most distinguished mixed-voice choirs of the University of Cambridge as well as awards in Austria, Germany, Israel and Palestine, Italy, Portugal, Singapore, Canada, and Hong Kong. The members of the group are university students or graduates from the University of Cambridge. In 2017, Toccata Classics released the first Girton College CD alongside Guildhall’s Historical Brass in Orlando di Lasso’s five-part Requiem (TOCC 0396). Later recordings included Manuel Cardoso’s Missa Secundi Toni (TOCC 0576) and Palestrina’s Missa Sine Nomine (TOCC 0516).
The pioneering recordings of the music of Marc'Antonio Engineers, however, brought the greatest praise and attention, with the first CD that entered the professional classical music charts at number 9 and received a nomination for an International Classical Music Award in the Early Music Category. The second CD also entered the classical music charts and was named "Registrazione storica".On the second disc Choir & Organ magazine wrote: "The young voices [of Girton College, Cambridge] shine and shine for their second disc of works by Marc'Antonio Ingegneri [...]. This program lives up to the promise of the former as Gareth Wilson continues his mission to return Engineers to a suitably honored position'
