Jeugdsymfonieorkest de Vuurvogel

In March 2002 the Youth Symphony Orchestra de Vuurvogel (the Firebird) in Zwolle was founded
by the current conductor Albert Dam. Soon a second and later a third section could be added: the
Jonge Vuurvogel (8-14 years) and OpStreek for beginning string players. Several highlights have
been achieved in the orchestra's short existence, including crossovers with the Meander Bigband,
New Year's concerts for the municipality of Zwolle, opening concerts at the Overijssel Liberation
Festival, the concert for the royal couple on '200 years of kingdom', duo concerts with the Orkest
van het Oosten and the concert for Kingsday in 2016 in Zwolle. In 2013 the orchestra reached the
finals of the National Competition for Youth Symphony Orchestras and in 2015 the orchestra
received the "Talent Prize Overijssel" from the Province of Overijssel. The youth orchestra has
collaborated with Emmy Verhey, Wibi Soerjadi, Carla Leurs, Izhar Elias, Miss Montreal.…and
many others. Other highlights were the tours to Germany (2005), Italy (2008), France (2011),
Spain (2014), Czech Republic (2017). In the summer of 2020 the tour will go to Northern Italy.

Albert Dam Direttor

Conductor and initiator of the Youth Symphony Orchestra de Vuurvogel (the Firebird) is Albert
Dam. At the Royal Conservatoire he studied bachelor and master horn with Oldrich Milek and
Jasper de Waal. He also gained orchestral experience in The Hague with, among others, the
Residentieorkest. In addition to his horn studies he studied music in Zwolle with the first music
subject piano (pop/jazz) of pianist/arranger Rik Elings.
Albert is connected to Meander College as music teacher and conductor of the Meander Bigband,
Meander Vocaal and the Meander String Ensemble. He has been a teacher at the ArtEZ
Conservatory in Zwolle for over 19 years. At the Meander College he is responsible for the preeducation
of the ArtEZ Conservatoire which is offered within the school.
As a performing horn player Albert is a member of the Ensemble Conservatoire and Musica
Michaelis accompaniment orchestras and regularly plays chamber music.
On a freelance basis he writes arrangements and compositions for various line-ups and projects.
Albert takes orchestral conducting lessons privately with Jurjen Hempel.
